We’re all in sales now, writes Dan Pink in To Sell is Human. Pink points out that 1 in 9 workers are in sales, while the rest of us are still “selling” ideas or techniques.

In a study commissioned for the book, Pink found that knowledge workers spend up to 40 percent of their work time selling something. With the continuing growth of the internet and all the innovations it entails, along with the current rise of the entrepreneur, one can only assume that number is going to rise.

One of the most essential skills required to sell something — whether physical products, ideas, or a perspective — is language. To persuade is to use language in a way that conveys to the potential client everything they need to buy in, and does so convincingly.

Anyone can learn to do this, simply by learning the principles of copywriting and spending a lot of time practicing by writing and testing what works with an audience.

Copywriting is the work you see spread through advertisements, websites, press releases, speeches, and all manner of other communication channels that include an element of persuasion.

Brain_re-wiring-01Just as weightlifting and physical exercise builds your muscles, when you’re learning the nerve cells in your brain are growing with mental exercise and these neurons are developing greater connectivity.

The growth and rewiring of our brain cells is called neuroplasticity. As we learn, our brain literally remodels itself based on our new experiences.

Until recently, the conventional thinking was that our brains were hardwired at birth and therefore unchangeable. In actuality, our brains are like malleable plastic that is constantly being reshaped by our daily experiences.

Ultimately, you are the architect of your brain. When you change your beliefs, learn something new or become mindful of your habitual reactions to unpleasant emotions, you actually alter the neurochemistry and the structure of your brain.

Alpha brainstorming

a-positive-attitude-may-not-solve-all-your-problems-but-it-will-annoy-enough-people-to-make-it-worth-the-effort-26Start with a meditation for 10-15 minutes following your own technique or the meditation process given in the video.

You will know you’ve reach the alpha brainwave state when you start to feel really relaxed and your thoughts begin to quiet. Keep in mind that if you haven’t meditated before you may have to practice meditation a number of times before reaching the alpha state.

When you reach the relaxed alpha state, start thinking about the problem you’re looking for an answer to. Try to think about it and examine it from different angles. Think of the why, what, where and how of the problem. Spend about 3-5 minute doing this.

Next, try holding the problem in your mind’s eye for a couple minutes by simply relaxing and visualizing it from all the different angles you just examined. After this, ask your creative intelligence to solve this problem. Then you can relax, let go and rely on your subconscious processing to do the rest.

Sometimes, the creative insight will pop right into my head. However, this is rare. Usually, it will trigger in the early morning when I’m waking up, taking a shower or even a few days later. The key is that you don’t try to force it. Just let go after doing the meditation and visualization practice and trust your creative intelligence to figure it out.

Biomimicry is quickly becoming a cornerstone of sustainable design (read our story on biomimicry from 2008), but for designers who want to incorporate biomimicry into their work, many don’t know where to start. Some famous biomimetic solutions have gotten passed around the mainstream press—including examples like self-cleaning surfaces modeled on lotus flowers, or the sticky repositionable tape inspired by gecko feet—but biomimicry isn’t as easy as using nature as a crib sheet. “One of the big realizations that designers have when they play with biomimicry is that it’s not a tool, it’s a mindset shift,” says Dayna Baumeister, who co-founded the Biomimicry Guild with Benyus in 1998. “Because of that—because of the fundamentally different way of thinking—it’s hard.”

Even for biologists, it requires a shift in thinking, says Baumeister, from learning about nature to learning from nature, including how each of those processes fit within a larger ecosystem. In a way, it’s examining nature’s solutions for survival, but through a design lens, says Chris Allen, project manager for AskNature.org. “You can look at brilliant engineering and strategies for living over thousands of years.”

Biomimicry a Growing Opportunity for Students

The course of Biomimicry has been very inspirational for students and they are thus seen gaining much interest in the same. The main reason for getting attracted towards the course is the limitless inspiration that can be derived by the same. It helps the students to be innovative in their designs and planning while learning through different components present in nature.

It has been able to inspire many professionals in the field of engineering, architecture, chemist, chefs, medical professionals, plumbers etc. The course helps students to indulge in science and nature and also helps them to convert the same for more product able experience. Many Universities all across the world are generating the opportunity by introducing the course in their curriculum. A few to show the existence of bio mimicry as a subject are:

Perry Binder is a legal studies professor at Georgia State University, writes “Here are my tips for picking a career path in college:
1. Don’t let anyone crush your dreams. However, the riskier your dream, the better your backup plan must be.
2. There is a huge difference between a childhood dream and a dream job. If you dreamed of being a lawyer since the age of twelve, you better make sure you know exactly what attorneys do on a given twelve hour work day. Did You Know: In a survey of 800 attorneys, only 55 percent reported being satisfied with their career.
Career Path3. Make sure your dream job is not an avocation (a hobby). An avocation is a vacation from a vocation, because the pay ranges from little to nothing.
4. No matter what your part-time jobs or summer jobs are, always be thinking about how those experiences will enhance your resume and work skills.
5. The most important thing for deciding on a major or career path is to get out of the classroom and into an internship which exposes you to the day-to-day ups and downs of that profession. “Learning by doing” will give you a better appreciation of the job than learning through textbooks.”

PUPPET A Hot Technology Skill

Puppet is an open source tool used to automate many of the tasks system admins perform manually, which many believe is the only way to handle the ever-increasing infrastructures needed to compete in a global market. This type of technology then frees up SysAdmins to Puppet01perform tasks that will drive better value for their organization. “It has gained a foothold with some of tech’s biggest players, and Puppet Labs completed a $40 million round of investment funding in mid-June,” Dice.com President Shravan Goli said in a report last September. Job listings for this skill have increased 66 percent year over year.

What Do We Mean By The Term “Biomimicry?”
Biomimicry is a term that has been derived from bios which means life and mimesis which means to imitate. It is a new science that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems.

For a better understanding we can take an example of studying a leaf which can be done in order to develop a better solar cell. The main idea behind this fast picking stream of science would be to research and study the models of nature and then develop more similar models to support the existing life structure.
Students worldwide are getting attracted to this stream and are looking forward to make a brilliant career in the field of research and development by enhancing their skills through the course. It is a science which is deals with more learning through nature and then built similar models for existing life forms.
Biomimicry as a Career
The science which deals with the mimic of nature has been able to establish itself in many fields. Biomimicry is being used by architectures to build cities and a leading example has been the use of Voronoi Diagram to build an atrium which helps in solving water logging problems. It was inspired by the butterfly wings. Its growing visibility is inspiring many professionals to learn the ways of nature and then mimic the same in their own profession.
A recent study states that dragon flies have inspired University researchers to design a light flying robot. It is a first of its kind which is light weight and can flap wings. The Biomimicry science is an opportunity in its own self and can be used in any field for inspiration.
